“The Challenge” was to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight on a four man pedalo in 14 hours.
Date: 31 August, 2017
11 August 2017 started as any normal work day, but for four members of the GHG Team it ended with a soggy jaunt around the Isle of Wight on a pedalo. But don’t worry it wasn’t in the style of Freddie Flintoff!!!
Sharon Williams, Austin Snelgrove, Mark Watson and Frances McMullan volunteered to participate in the Great Pedalo Challenge in aid of Wetwheels, a charity that helps disabled people get out on the water with the help of their specially adapted boats.
“The Challenge” was to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight on a four man pedalo in 14 hours, split into relays, the GHG Team proudly took their place and managed to pedal all the way from Ryde to Cowes.
It was not all “plain sailing” and the first challenge was to get on the pedalo, a difficult enough task in flat water, let alone a mile out from the shore in rocky waves with very little to hold onto. But after a quick, if un-elegant, change the team were off!!
At the end of our stint the team, once again, did their dodgy dance to the rib and were finally deposited back on to dry land (well boat but it was dry!) as the wet clothes were replaced with dry ones, and the bacon sandwiches and tea was handed round they were able to reflect on a job well done.
The team have pedalled 6 miles in open water and had managed to raise over £450.00 for this great local charity. Not bad for a Friday afternoon. To see the amazing work that the charity does please feel free to click the link here to view WetWheels website.
