Staff complete UKATA and HSE approved asbestos awareness courses.
Date: 01 March, 2017
GHG Limited claims handlers and other employees with initial contact with policyholders have recently completed a UKATA and HSE approved asbestos awareness course. We also took this opportunity to review our risk assessment training.
Asbestos has been in use in buildings for hundreds of years but was extensively used as a building material in the UK from the 1950s through to the mid 1980s. It was however still in use until the end of the 1990’s.
Asbestos is strong and lightweight and it has unique properties such as not being affected by chemicals or heat processes. It was used for a variety of purposes and was ideal for fireproofing and insulation. Any building built before 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc.) can contain asbestos.
The unique properties of asbestos also make it difficult for the human body to eliminate, particularly our lungs, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that asbestos-related diseases account for around 4,000 deaths a year in the UK alone. That is why the HSE and other refer to it as the ‘hidden killer’.
Whilst the risk from contamination after an insured event is relatively small, loss adjusters need to know where it might be located, what to look for and how to deal with asbestos when it is exposed. This course reminded the GHG team to be alert and to ensure a proportionate response to any asbestos uncovered due to an insured event.
